Question
Problem 18.28
A convex mirror, like the passenger-side rearview mirror on a car, has a focal length of -2.0 m . An object is 4.0 m from the mirror.
Part A
Use ray tracing to determine the location of its image. How far is the image from the mirror? Input positive value if the image is on the same side from the mirror as an object and negative if the image is on the other side.
Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.
q = ______________
Part B
Is the image upright or inverted? Is it real or virtual?
_ Inverted, virtual. _ Upright, virtual. _ Inverted, real. _ Upright, real.Explanation / Answer
For Convex mirror
1/f = 1/p + 1/q
f = -2m
p = 4 m
q = ?
-1/2 = 1/4 + 1/q
1/q = -(1/2) -(1/4) = -0.75
q =-1/0.75 = -1.33 m
since q is negative the image is formed on the opposite side of the object
virtual image is formed(since q is negative)
magnification m = -q/p = hi/ho
hi = 1.33*ho/4
since hi is a positive value
then the image is upright
So finally a upright and virtual image is formed
