Q: Consider point P midway between two resistor wirea spaced 5cm, in the following circuit. assume the wires above and below point P is infinitely long.
a) what is the current throught each resistor?

b) what is the direction and magnitude of magnetic field due to the two wires

c) if proton was travelling 650 km/s at point P. what is the magnitude and direction of the force on proton

Explanation / Answer

Since the values of resistances and the potential of the battery is not visible therefore I am assuming corresponding variabe.
Say potential of battery is V
and resisttance of upper and lower wire is R1 and R2 respectively.
Now since both the wire are connected in parallel therefore
Net resistance R = R1R2/ (R1+ R2)
Current in the circuit I = V/R
(a)
Since both wire are in parallel connection therefore
Potential will be same
I1R1 = I2R2
and I = I1+ I2
On solving these two equation we have value of I1 and I2.
(b)
Now we have to calcualte magnetic field produce by these wire.
SInce current is flowing in same direction therefore both wire will opppose the magnetic field produce by each other.
magnetic field produce by upper wire B1 = uoI1 / 2*Pi*r where r = 5/2 cmis distance from wire
similarly due to lower wire B2 =  uoI2 / 2*Pi*r
here also r = 5/2 cm
net field at point P B = B1 - B2
direction will be in the outward direction if I2 is more than I1 and vice versa.
(c)If velocity is v = 650 km/s
then force = qvB = (1.6*10-19)(650*103)(B) N
Direction of the force will depend upon the direction of magnetic field.
By using Right hand rule we can find the direction of force.
