Question

Please answer part a, b, d. Part d is especially difficult for me to figure out 8. Long straight power lines carrying an AC curent o in the (rms) e-3,0m-610 pass over a wheat field; the end-on view is s hown in diagram. The currents are oppositely directed at any instant of time. a) (4) How large is the peak current through the wires? 150m b) (6) At the instant when the current peaks, how large is the magnetic field magnitude produced by just one wire, at the point P in the wheat field below the wires? 4 s. d) (6) Using information and the diagram from the previous page, what is the net magnetic field vector (give magnitude and direction) at point P, as produced by both wires acting together when the current peaks? (Hint: draw a vector diagram!)

Explanation / Answer

a) peak current Imax =225* sqrt 2 = 318.2 A

b) B = uo Imax/[2pi sqrt(1.5^2 + 15^2)]

= 2*10^-7*318.2/sqrt(1.5^2 + 15^2

= 4.22 *10^-6 T

d) horizontl component of field of each wire cancel out while vertical component get added up. So we multiplied by 2

B = 4.22 *10^-6 * 2*1.5/sqrt(1.5^2 + 15^2)

= 8.4*10^-7 T
