HW1 Due: 5/19/2016 All problems may be solved either graphically or by using Cartesian coordinates unless the method is mentioned in the problem. 1. Using the graphical method a. Find the magnitude of the resultant, R, of A & B b. Find the angle of R relative to the positive x-axis A-14 Ans: (a) 19.2 45° 2. Using the same image from Problem 1 30 a. Find the i and j Cartesian components of both A & B B 10 b. Find the vector, C, if C B-A c. Find the direction of C relative to the positive x-axis. Ans: (c) -94.8

Explanation / Answer

1)    Horizontal value = 14cos45 + 10cos30

                                    = 18.559

        Vertical value =    14sin45 - 10sin30

                                    = 4.899

=> Resultant value = 19.2

=> angle of R = tan-1(4.899/18.559)

                         = 14.78 degree

2)    For A   = 9.899 i + 9.899 j

      For B = 8.66 i - 5 j

=> C = B - A

             = - 1.239 i - 14.899 j

=>    Direction of C = - (180 - tan-1(14.899/1.239))

                                 =   - 94.8 degree
