Question
Could I please get a detailed explanation of how to do this problem? Please execute problem with algebra based physics. Thank you!
A parallel plate capacitor has a plate with the area of 0.0280 m^2 and a separation of 0.550 mm. The capacitor has a material of an unknown dielectric constant. When the capacitor is connected to a 12V battery, the capacitor obtains a charge of 3.62*10^-8 C. Calculate the dielectric constant:
The answer should be 6.7. I would just like to understand how to solve this problem.
Explanation / Answer
here,
area of plates , A = 0.028 m^2
sepration , d = 5.5 * 10^-4 m
voltage of battery connected , V = 12 V
charge , Q = 3.62 * 10^-8 C
let the dielectric constant be k
A * e0 * k /d = C = Q/V
0.028 * 8.85 * 10^-12 * k/( 5.5 * 10^-4 ) = 3.62 * 10^-8 / 12
k = 6.7
the dielectric constant is 6.7
