California Conor, a majestic bird with a wingspan of 9.5 feet and weighing up to 25 pounds, is the largest land bird in North America.
During the 1980's its population had dramatically decreased to such a point that it would have been extinct if proper conservation strategies were not implemented. There were 23 birds left in the wild.
To save these majestic birds from extinction, a captive breeding program was tought about, wherby all the condors present were captured, bred, and when their number would significantly increase, they would be re -introduced in the wild.
A major reason for decrease in condor population, has been contamination from lead fragments in carcasses, poison bait, and environmental pollutants. Contamination from the use of the pesticide DDT may also have prevented the hatching of some condor eggs.
