Question
A monatomic ideal gas at 300 K occupies 5.00 L at 1 atm (point A in the diagram at right) It is warmed isochoric ally to point B at 3.00 atm. Then it is allowed to expand isothermally back to its starting pressure (point C), before being returned isobaric ally to its original state, (a) find the number of moles, n, in the sample, (b) Find the temperature at point B and (c) the temperature at point C, and (d) the volume at point C. (e) Now consider the entire process ABC A. Find Q, W, and delta U for each of the processes, (f) Find Q, W, and delta U for the whole cycle.Explanation / Answer
(a)
PV = nRT
n = PV/RT = 101325 pa ( 5.0 L)/ 8.314( 300 K)
=203.12 moles
(b)
Pb V = nRTb
PaV = nR Ta
Pb/Pa = Tb/Ta
Tb = Ta( Pb/Pa) = 300 K ( 3/1) = 900 K
(c)
Tb= Tc
Tc= 900 K
(d)
PcVc= PbVb
Vc = Pb Vb/Pc
= 3(5)/1 = 15 L
