Question
Quantitative Questions. Show your work, especially diagrams. Explain your reasoning and justify your work using (and stating) the concepts and definitions we covered in class. 1.) In the circuit shown, R_1 is a 100-Ohm resistor, and R_3 is a 50-ohm resistor, (a) indicate (draw on the diagram) how you would connect a voltmeter (or differential voltage sensor) to measure the potential difference across R_3. (b) What value of resistor would you need tor R_2 if you w anted the voltmeter to measure a value of 5 v. (c) What current flow s through R_2? (d) If the resistance of R_2 is doubled, what would be the new measured potential difference measured by the voltmeter? Explain your reasoning and justify your work using the fundamental physics principles and definitions we covered in class.Explanation / Answer
b) If voltmeter reads 5V
Current through it = I=V/R=5/50=0.1A
Same current flows through R2
Potential across it 20-5=15V
Hence R2= V/I=15/0.1=150ohm
c) Current through R2 = 0.1A
d) If R2 is doubled it becomes 300ohm
Voltmeter reading= 50*20/350=2.85V
