Question

Select True or False for the following statements about electromagnetic waves.

True False  The Earth's atmosphere is quite transparent to infrared radiation.
True False  A vertical automobile antenna is sensitive to electric fields polarized vertically.
True False  Radio waves have wavelengths longer than 1 m.
True False  Gamma rays can be produced through electrons oscillating in wires of electric circuits.
True False  X-rays travel in vacuum at a higher speed than the visible light.
True False  The sun's radiation is most intense in the infrared region.
True False  Blue light has a longer wavelength than red.

Explanation / Answer

Hi,

1) Considering that most of the radiation coming from the sun is absorbed by the atmosphere (letting pass only visible light, radio waves and some more) we can say that this statement is false. (False).

2) This statement is true, as there are various types of antennas and they are sensitive to a specific polarization of the electric fields. (True).

3) This statement is definitely true as the radio waves are longer than any other. (True).

4) Gamma rays are produced for radioactive element or from violent sub-atomic process, and because of that they have a lot of energy. Having said that, this statement is probably false, as the process needed to produce gamma rays should not be possible in the wires of electric circuits. (False).

5) According to modern physics, nothing can travel at higher speed than light, so this statement is false. (False).

6) If we define 'intense' as something with more energy, then the sun's radiation should be more intense in the ultraviolet region, as waves with less wavelength have more energy. So this statement should be false (False).

7) Blue light is closer to the ultraviolet region and red light is closer to the infrared region. As the ultraviolet has a smaller wavelength than the infrared, the blue light should have a shorter wavelength than the red one. So this statement should be false. (False).

I hope it helps
