Question
Two long, straight, parallel wires of length 4.1 m carry parallel currents of 3.4 A and 1.0 A. (a) If the wires are separated by a distance of 3.8 cm, what is the magnitude of the force between the two wires? N (b) Is this force attractive or repulsive? attractive repulsive (c) If the currents are in opposite directions (antiparallel), how do the answers to parts (a) and (b) change? What is the magnitude of the force between the two wires? N Is this force attractive or repulsive? attractive. repulsive.Explanation / Answer
a) F = (uo*I1*I2*L)/(2pi*d) = (4pi*10^-7*3.4*1.0*4.1)/(2pi*0.038) = 7.34*10^-5 N
b) As current is parallel and in same direction, the force will be attractive.
c) By changing the direction of current in opposite direction, there will be no change in magnitude of force
so, F = 7.34*10^-5 N
But force will become repulsive here.
