Question

In the figure below are shown four identical capacitors and two identical batteries connected in series and parallel. ranking the variables for the four capacitors. Once you have decided on your ranking for each problem, select the numbers of the capacitors (C1, C2, C3, and C4) and the relational operators (GT to mean greater than, and EQ to mean equal) that produces the correct ordering for each variable.

A. What is the ranking of the voltage drops across the capacitors?
B. What is the ranking of the magnitudes of the electric fields inside the capacitors?
C. What is the ranking of the energy stored in the capacitors?
D. What is the ranking of the net charge on each capacitor?

4 3 0 12

Explanation / Answer

Here C1 = C2 = C3 = C4

a) Voltage in series divide and in parallel it remains same. Also capacitors are identical,

So, voltage ranking is, C1 = C2 < C3 = C4

b) As Electric field = E = V/d and d = same for all capacitors

   So, Electric field ranking is, C1 = C2 < C3 = C4

c)   As Energy stored = U = 0.5CV^2 and C = same for all capacitors

   So, Energy ranking is, C1 = C2 < C3 = C4

d) As Charge = Q = CV and C = same for all capacitors

   So, charge ranking is, C1 = C2 < C3 = C4
