Question

Regulation of Gene Expression: Galactose Permease Model You have found both a regulatory protein that influences galactose uptake and an active transport protein (galactose permease) that is required for Yourfavorite yogurtbacterium to take up galactose. Now, you can do experiments to look at the regulation of galactose permease 1. Do these data indicate that galactose induces or represses transcription of the galactose permease genes? Why? 2. Do these data indicate that the galactose genes are under positive or negative control? How do you know? with without aiactose galactose 3. Putting together the data from a) and b), explain how this bacterium regulates the production of galactose permease. How does this help the cell? with without galactose galactose

Explanation / Answer

1. As shown in graph, the amount of galactose permease produced is more in presence of galactose as compared to without galactose.

2. The galactose genes are under positive control . As transcription is more in presence of galactose. Here Positive control means transcription will increase in the presence of inducer and negative control means that transcription decreases in the presence of repressor. In this case transcription is increasing so it is an example of inducible operon.

3.This works same as Lac Operon . Galactose permease is produced in presence of galactose only. It helps the cell in a way that there is no energy loss. Cell dose not waste its energy in making permease. The regulator helps in galactose uptake
