Question
Please answer part B.
A beaker of water sits in the sun until it reaches an equilibrium temperature of 30°C. The beaker is made of 100 g of aluminum and contains 180 g of water. In an attempt to cool this system, 100 g of ice at 0°C is added to the water. (a) Determine the final temperature of the system. If Tf = 0°C, determine how much ice remains. (b) Repeat your calculations for 50 g of ice.
Part B) if the aluminum cup has twice the mass but the same valume, how many grams of ice could be melted?
a. 76 g
b. 100 g
c. 84 g
d. none of the other answers is correct
Explanation / Answer
heat lost by beaker = heat gained by ice
specific heat of aluminium = 0.9 J/gm K
specific heat of water = 4.186 J/gm K
heat = mass * specific heat * change in temperature
200 * 0.9 * (30 - 0) + 180 * 4.186 * (30 - 0) = m * 334
m = 84 gm
amount of ice could me melted = 84 gm
