Explanation / Answer

Title:Inactivation of microbes by chemical agents or by physical methods.

Name of the writer : as per concerned

Name of the Co workers: as per participated

Introduction : several chemical agents are used as antiseptics and disinfectants.

An ideal antiseptic or disinfectant should follow:

A) have a wide spectrum of activity and be effective against all microbes i.e bacteria including spores, viruses, protozoa and fungi.

B) be active in the presence of organic matter

C) be effective in acid as well as alkaline media

D) have speedy action

E) have high penetrating power

F) be compatible with other antiseptic and disinfectant

The factors that determine the potency of disinfectants are:

Concentration of the substance

PH of the medium

Temperature

Nature of the organism

Presence of extraneous material

Chemical agents act in various ways such as: by protein coagulation, by disruption of the cell membrane resulting in exposure, damage or loss of contents, by removal of free sulphydral groups essential for functioning of the enzymes or by substrate competition-a compound resembling the essential substrate of the enzyme diverts or misleads the enzyme necessary for the metabolism of the cell and causes cell death.

The antibacterial agents are the cationic surface active agent

Mechanism:These act on the phosphate groups of the cell membrane and also enter the cell. The membrane loses its semi permeability and the cell proteins are denatured. The cationic compounds in the dorm of quarternary ammonium compounds are markedly bactericidal, being active against gram positive organisms and to a lesser extent on gram negative ones. They have no action on spores, tubercle bacillius and most viruses.

Results : organic matter reduces their action and anioinc surface active agents like ordinary soaps, render them inactive. The anioinc compounds have moderate action on microbes.

Discussion :Gram positive and the Neisseria group of organisms may be amphoteric or ampholytic compounds, known as Tego compounds are active against a wide range of gram positive and gram negative including some viruses too.
