Question

Map pling As you may have learned when studying the properties of thermal energy, building contractors often install double-glazed windows to prevent thermal energy ("heat") from entering/exiting the building Although effective as such windows presentinteresting optical effects. In the figure, a double-glazed window comprises two identical panes of glass (ng a 1.46) separated by an air gap. If the light encounters the glass at an angle of 40.00 with respect to the glass, find the shift in path Axas the light enters the room. Use na 1.00) 40.00 Number mm 32.0 mm glass 25.6 mm air glass 32.0 mm

Explanation / Answer

In case of no deflection,
tan(90 - 40) = Perpendicular/ (32.0 + 25.6 + 32.0)
h = 106.78 mm

In Case of Deflection,
Using Snell's law,
1 * sin(50) = 1.46 * sin()
= 31.65 o
h1 = 32.0 * tan(31.65)
h1 = 19.73 mm

Again using Snell's law,

1.46 * sin(31.65) = 1.0 * sin()
= 50o
h2 = 25.6 * tan(50)
h2 =  30.51 mm

Again using Snll's law for second slab we can find, h3 = 19.73 mm

Total = h1 + h2 + h3
Total = 19.73 + 30.51 + 19.73 = 69.97 mm

d = 106.78 mm -  69.97 mm
d = 36.81 mm

x = 36.81 * tan(40)
x = 30.9 mm
