What am I doing wrong?
Please Help
A copper container of mass 0.3kg contains 0.45kg of water. Container and water are initially @ Room temp 20degreeC. A/kg Block of metal is Heated to 100 degreeC and placed into water. The final Temp of the system is 40degreeC. Find the specific heat of the Block. Neglect Heat loss to the environment (treat copper container as a calorimeter.) I used c = mwater(water(DeltaT)water/mobjectDeltaT)object = (0.45)(4.186)(20)/(1)(60) = 0.6279 But by teach says the answer is c = 0.159 Kcal/kg DegreeCExplanation / Answer
according to principle of caloriemetry
heat lost by block = heat gained by water + heat gained by copper
m*S_b*(dT) = m_cu*S_cu*dT + m_w*s_w*dT
(1*S_b*(100-40)) = (0.3*385*(40-20)) + (0.45*4186*(40-20))
s_b = 666.4 J/kg-K
S_b = 666.4/4.186 cal /kg C = 159 cal/kg -C
S_b =0.159 k cal /kg-C
