3. a. One hundred milliliters of 0.200 M ATP is mixed with an ATPase in a Dewar at 298 K, 1 atm, pH 7.0, pMg 3.0, and 0.25 M ionic strength. The temperature of the solution increases 1.48 K. What is AH for the hydrolysis of ATP to adenosine 5 diphosphate (ADP) and phosphate (P ATP H2O ADP Pi Assume that the heat capacity of the system is 418 JK b. Under the same conditions, the hydrolysis of ADP has a heat of reaction, AH of -28.9 kJ/mol. Use this to calculate AH for the adenylate kinase reaction: 2ADP. AMP ATP c. If the energy released from the hydrolysis of 0.02 moi of ATP in (a) is converted into raising a 10 kg object, what is the final height, h, attained?

Explanation / Answer

a) delta H for hydrolysis = 418 * 3 * 0.7

                                         = 877.8 J

b) delta H = - 28.9 * 0.2

                    = - 5.78 kJ

c) final height = (5.78 * 1000)/(10 * 9.8)

                       = 59 m
