Question

Can you please show preparation, plan, solving with each step and how to check? I'm having trouble figuring out this problem. Thank you!!
Problem 6 -Chapter 11 A student measures the following data in a calorimetry experiment designed to determine the specific heat of aluminum. a) Initial temperature of water and calorimeter -70°C; Mass of water-0.5 kg: Mass of calorimeter-0.04kg; kJ/kg-oC; In Specific heat of calorimeter emperature of aluminum 27.0°C; Mass of aluminum 0.23kg; Final temperature of mixture -66.2 C. your experience where is the "mistake", and why?

Explanation / Answer

a)

Ti = initial temperature of water and calorimeter = 70

Ti' = initial temperature of aluminium = 27

T = equilibrium temperature = 66.2

mw = mass of water = 0.5 kg

mc = mass of carolimeter = 0.04 kg

ma = mass of aluminium = 0.23 kg

cw = specific heat of water = 4186

cc = specific heat of calorimeter = 630

ca= specific heat of aluminium

Heat lost by water and calorimeter = Heat gained by aluminium

mw cw (Ti - T) + mc cc (Ti - T) = ma ca (T - T')

(0.5) (4186) (70 - 66.2) + (0.04) (630) (70 - 66.2) = (0.23) ca (66.2 - 27)

ca = 892.8

b)

%age error = (900 - 892.8) x 100/900 = 0.8 %
