Question

Impulse problem. The PC has plotted the force applied by the force transducer to the car. In principle, the proper way to use this information is to integrate the transducer signal to obtain F dt. This could be done numerically by the computer but would be of little educational value. Instead, we use an approximate technique often used in practice. Assume the signal looks like the one in Figure 5.4.

max z 3 o 2 msec 40 10 50 60 20 30 Time (ms) Figure 5.4: The signal of the force transducer as a function of time measured by the PC during a collision with a car. The FWHM of the signal is At and the maximum force is Fmax.

Explanation / Answer

from graph Fmax = 6 N

and t = 40 - 10 = 30 ms= 30*10^-3 s = 0.03 s

Impulse J = (Fmax)t = 6 * 0.03 = 0.18 kgm/s
