Question
For questions 3 and 4 see diagram below. These problems involve use of Newton's first law as well the kinematics we have already covered. A large block of ice is on the bed of a flatbed truck and the truck is large block of ice is on the floor of traveling at a constant speed of 30 m/s in a straight line. The truck then slows down to a speed of 5 m/s over a fairly short time interval. Imagine two one in the bed of the truck and another on the ground who track the motion of the ice block from their respective reference frames as the truck slows down. There is negligible friction between the ice block and the bed floor. Describe the motion that each person observes. Be specific. The observer in the truck bed claims that the block of ice has accelerated forward and therefore an unbalanced force acts on the block. The ground based observer disputes this claim and uses Newton's first law and the observations he made regarding the ice block's motion to support his argument. What might the ground based observer say, assuming he gets it right?Explanation / Answer
3). The motion is accelerated as, since velocity is changing .
a). One observer who is in truck bed , will see that ice block is not moving . this is due to the reason that truck , ice block, and person all are moving with same velocity thus there is no relative motion among them
other observer at ground will see ice block moving with the same speed as that of truck and in the same direction in which truck is moving.
b). since the speed of truck is decreasing with time . the lower portion of ice is in contact with truck but not upper portion . so upper portion resists the change in decrease of velocity thereby moving forward. the observer at rest uses this concept of inertia, and contradict the statement made by observer in truck that unbalanced force is acting upon ice block .
