Problem 6.10

Two objects attract each other gravitationally with a force of 2.5×1010 N when they are 0.25 m apart. Their total mass is 4.40 kg .

Part A

Find their individual masses.

Express your answer using one significant figure

mlarger = kg

Part B

Express your answer using one significant figure.

msmaller = kg

Explanation / Answer

let mass of two objects are m1 kg and m2 kg.

then m1+m2=4.4 kg...(1)

gravitational force=2.5*10^(-10) N

6.674*10^(-11)*m1*m2/0.25^2=2.5*10^(-10)

==>m1*m2=2.5*10^(-10)*0.25^2/(6.674*10^(-11))=0.23412...(2)

then m1-m2=sqrt((m1+m2)^2-4*m1*m2)

=sqrt(4.4^2-4*0.23412)=4.2923...(3)

adding equation 1 and equation 3:

m1=4.3461 kg

then m2=4.4-m1=0.053869 kg

part A:

using one significant figure, m_larger=4 kg

part B:

using one significant figure,
m_smaller=0.05 kg
