Question
Part A. Why are the wavelengths of energy emitted from the Earth longer than those emitted by the sun?
A. wavelength is related to the temperature of the source
B. the Earth is radioactive
C. the sun is yellow, the Earth is darker
D. seasonal changes on Earth cause longer waves to be emitted
Part B. Once the solar beam reaches Earth’s atmosphere, some of the processes that occur which affect this energy are:
a) absorption
b) scattering
c) reflection (albedo)
d) refraction
e) all the above
Explanation / Answer
Part A.
Answer - A. Wavelength is related to the temperature of the source
Explanation -
a body or a object emits some amount of electromagnetic radiation where wavelength is inversely proportional to its temperature. Sun has a very high temperature and earth has a lower temperature. Therefore the wavelength of energy emitted by Earth is longer than that of the Sun.
Part B..
Answer - e. All of the above
Explanation - As the beam of the sun reaches the earth, it seizes into the atmosphere. A small amount of the sun's energy is directly absorbed particularly by the greenhouse gases ( a Greenhouse gas is a gas that absorbs and EMIT Radiant energy within the thermal infrared range) like Ozone and the water vapour. Some of its energy is refracted and scattering also occurs. Some of the Sun's energy is reflected back to space by clouds and the surface of the Earth.
