Question

CH3 RH3 Questions 1. Why are we interested in Air Pressure and how is it measured? What factors create wind, how does it flow? What are the two main properties of wind that we measure? How do we measure wind speed? 2. 3. Briefly explain the four driving forces within the atmosphere. Relate the general temperature and precipitation characteristics of the tropics to the ITCZ and the trade winds. 4. Weather maps of surface conditions are made with isobars, lines of equal air pressure. What do the symbols mean? 5. 6. What are the monsoons and how are they related to the ITCZ? When and what are the impacts on south Asia? 8. Summarize the main effects and timescales of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation.

Explanation / Answer

ANswer 1: we are interested in pressure because lower the pressure more chance of bad weather, since wind flow from high to low pressure and as the wind reach the low-pressure zone the rise and precipitate by adiabatic cooling,

It is measured by using a barometer.

Answer 2: Low pressure create winds, it flows from high pressure to low pressure, speed and direction, some time moisture content and temperature as well.

answer 3:a) Gravity, b) Pressure gradient force, c) Coriolis force, & d) Friction force.

answer 4: ITCZ (The Intertropical Convergence Zone), it is the zone near or at the equator where because of high temperature( because the sun always shines at a high angle in this zone), the air rises creates low pressure and high precipitation occurs.

answer 5/: The weather map shows the isobars, now isobar is the locus of all point which shares the same pressure, so if I said the isobar of 1 atm it means along this line all point are on the 1 atm pressure. The use of the isobar is to find the pressure gradient(difference in pressure at the different location of given area), more the pressure gradient more is the chance of bad weather.

answer 6: Moonson is a seasonal change in wind direction, During Moonson ITCZ moves toward either north or south, depends on the area where the sun shines at a high angle. India is a prominent place where you see the Moonson effect in South Asia.
