Question

Physical Geography Laboratory Manual Name Section EXERCISE 3 PROBLEMS-PART II 1. (a) Your plane leaves Boston (75° W) at 7:00 A.M.on Saturday, bound for Los Angeles (120 W). The flight takes 5 hours. What is the time and day when you arrive in Los Angeles? (b) Your connecting flight to Taipei (120° E) leaves Los Angeles at 1:00 P.M. on that same day. The flight takes 11 hours. What is the time and day when you arrive in Taipei? EXERCISE 3 PROBLEMS-PART III 1. For a given latitude, if the stated time of sunset is 6:45 P.M. at 90 W, what is the time of sunset at 91 w? 2. For a given latitude, if the stated time of sunrise is 6:10 A.M. at 120°00' W, what is the time of sunrise at 117 30' W? 14

Explanation / Answer

EXERCISE 3, PART- II

1. a) Saturday 9:00 AM

Explanation: 120 degrees - 75 degrees = 45 degrees

45 degrees ÷ 15 degrees = 3 hours (Since, 15 degrees takes 1 hour. The Earth is round therefore, 360 degrees ÷24 hours = 15)

5 hours - 3 hours = 2 hours (Since it is going from Boston is east of Los Angeles)

Therefore, 7:00 + 2 hours = 9:00 AM

b) Next Day at 4:00 PM

Taipei is 16 hours ahead of Los Angeles time, so the time in Taipei when your flight leaves LA would be 5:00AM the next calendar day. So by adding the 11 hours to the 5:00 AM time in Taipei is the time you arrive in Taipei and that would be 6:00 PM the next calendar day after you left LA.

EXERCISE-3, PART- III

1. We know, 60 minutes = 15 degrees

therefore, 1 degree = 4 minute

So from 90 degree west to 91 degree west is the difference of 1 degree.

So the Sunset would be at 6: 49pm which is 4 minutes after the original time.

2. In this problem, the difference in the latitude is 2.5 degrees.

Since 1 degree = 4 min

therefore, 2.5 degree = 10 minutes

So, by subtracting 10 minutes from 6:10 AM which is 6:00 AM was the time when there was sunrise at 117 degrees 30' W
