Question

Can you please answer 4

c. that sits on top of the zone of saturation. d. found on top of an isolated region of saturation above the normal water table. 4. The hydraulic conductivity to horizontal flow at a point in an aquifer is 5.0x10 cm/sec. The porous medium is anisotropic with K (horizontal) five times greater than K, (vertical). Measurements indicate a horizontal hydraulic gradient of 0.002 and a vertical hydraulic gradient of 0.0006. Calculate the x and z components of the specific discharge

Explanation / Answer

Answer- Hydraulic conductivity of horizontal flow Kx =5.0*104 cm/sec

it is also given that hydraulic conductivity of horizontal flow is 5 times greater than the hydraulic conductivity of the vertical flow

so the hydraulic conductivity of vertical flow is Kz= 1.0*104 cm/sec

Horizontal Hydraulic gradient ix = 0.002

vertical hydraulic gradient iz = 0.0006

Specific discharge for horizontal component is Qx = Kx*ix = 5*104 * 0.002 = 100cm/sec

Specific discharge for the vertical component is Qz = kz* iz = 1*104 * 0.0006= 6cm/sec
