Question

Part 1: A series circuit consists of a 0.022 µF capacitor, a 0.182 µF capacitor, and a 100 V battery. Find the charge on each capacitor. Answer in units of µC.

Part 2: Find the charge on the 0.022 µF capacitor if they are reconnected in parallel across the battery. Answer in units of µC.

Part 3: Find the charge on the 0.182 µF capacitor if they are reconnected in parallel across the battery. Answer in units of µC

I figured out Part 1 - the answer is 1.96275µC but I cannot figure out part 2 or 3. Please help!

For Part 2, I know the answer is NOT 1.96275µC or 2.2e-6µC. I tried those and the homework portal said they were incorrect.

Explanation / Answer

Part -2:

When the capacitors are connected in parallel.

Voltage across each of the capacitor shall be equal to 100 V

So, charge across 0.022 micro F capacitor = C*V = 0.022 x 10^-6 x 100 = 0.022 x 10^-4 C = 2.20 x 10^-6 C

Part -3

Again in the parallel connection -

Charge across the capacitor, 0.182 uF = 0.182 x 10^-6 x 100 = 0.182 x 10^-4 C = 18.2 x 10^-6 C = 18.2 micro C.
