Question
Political and legal battles over phosphate were fought through the 1970s and 1980s. Describe the regulatory situation for laundry detergents at the time this article was written in 1994. (Recent update: Proctor and Gamble stopped selling detergent with phosphates in the US in 1993, but continued to sell them overseas. In Jan 2014, they committed to phasing out phosphates everywhere, even where no legislations exist. This is anticipated to have the biggest impacts on eutrophication in developing countries.)
Explanation / Answer
Regulations were passed limiting the use of detergent to 8.7 percent which were again reduced to 2.2 percent in 1973. These stringent rules prevent the use of phosphate and decreases the level of eutrophication in great lakes.
regulation number 648/2004 is meant for controlling phospgorus levels .
