PHYS 212 RECITATION EXERCISE 2 CALCULATING CHANGES IN POTENTIAL ENERGY U & POTENTIAL The figure below shows four point charges, all the same distance a from the origin. Take the potential to be zero at infinity. Answer questions Q3-Q5 based upon this figure. Either a proton or an electron is moved from infinity to the origin along the line depicted by Path 1.Fill in the table below indicating the sign (+, - or 0) of each quantity 3. AU in moving charge to Work done by E field in moving charge to origin from infinity V at origin origin from infinity proton electron

Explanation / Answer

Since 2 charges are positive and 2 charges are negative potential at origin is zero. Potential at infinity is also zero so potential difference is also zero. Now work done By electric field is defined as negative of potential difference multiplied by charge(proton or electron here). Which is zero so work done by electric field is zero in both cases. This work is independent of path taken.

Since change in potential energy is negative of work by electric field, it is also zero.
