Question
Please explain your reasoning A bar magnet is suspended by a airing. With the magnet held in place, a charged rod is brought close to the point of suspension of the magnet as shown. The suspended bar magnet is then released so that it is free to rotate. Students are discussing what will happen when the magnet is free to rotate. Aaron: "I think the magnet will rotate clockwise when viewed from above. The north pole will be repelled by the positive charge, and the south pole will he attracted." Den: "I think the magnet will just sit there. A north pole is not like a positive charge." Carl: "It's more complicated than that. The magnet will induce a north pole on the charged rod because the magnetic field will cause the electron spins to align. Since there are then two north poles close to each other, the magnet will rotate clockwise." With which of these students do you agree? Aaron___Ben___Carl___None of them___ Explain your reasoning.Explanation / Answer
Ben's argument is correct.
magnet does not have any effect on a charged rod unless it is moving.
as the charge rod is stationary, there wont be any interaction between the two entities.
hence Ben's argument is correct.
