Question

I need help with this physics problem all four parts

A cylinder contains a mixture of helium and argon gas in equilibrium at 144 degree C. (a) What is the average kinetic energy for each type of gas molecule? helium Your response differs significantly from the correct answer. Rework your solution from the beginning and check each step carefully. argon Your response differs significantly from the correct answer. Rework your solution from the beginning and check each step carefully. (b) What is the rms speed of each type of molecule? helium Your response differs significantly from the correct answer. Rework your solution from the beginning and check each step carefully. km/s argon Your response differs significantly from the correct answer. Rework your solution from the beginning and check each step carefully. m/s

Explanation / Answer

(a) KEavg = (3/2)kBT = (3/2)(1.38x10-23 J/K)(144+273°K) = 8.63x10-21 J. Since the kinetic energy doesn't depend on the type of atom or molecule (i.e. no mass dependence), the result is the same for both gases.

b) KE = ½ m²
rms vel .. = (2 KE / m)

Taking the mass of a He atom .. m = 6.64^-27 kg
= (2 x 8.63^-21J / 6.64^-27kg) .. .. .. (He) = 1612.26 m/s = 1.61226 km / s

Taking the mass of an Ar atom .. m = 66.40^-27 kg
= (2 x 863^-21 / 66.40^-27) .. .. .. (Ar) = 509.84 m/s
