PLEASE EXPLAIN. I need great detail, please tell me which equations you are using and why you are using them.

2. HD 40307 is an extrasolar planet that orbits in the habitable zone of a star 42 light-years from Earth. It may be a rocky "super-Earth," with 7.1 times the mass and 1.8 times the radius of Earth. The "travel bureau" poster at right imagines that future space tourists could enjoy extreme skydiving above its surface. Note: The mass and radius of Earth are 5972 x 1034 kg and 6378 km, respectively. What is the acceleration due to gravity at the surface of HD 40307g? Show all work.

Explanation / Answer

Acceleration due to gravity on the surface of sphere of mass M, and radius R is given by
GM/R2 G is universal gravitational constant.
Acceleration due to gravity at the surface of earth
g = G Me / Re2   ( Me is mass of earth and re is radius of earth )
accelration due to gravity at the surface of HD 40307g
g' = G (7.1 Me) / (1.8 Re)2
   = 7.1 g / 1.82 = 2.19g
using earth mass = 5.972x1024 kg Radius = 6378000 m and G = 6.67 x 10-11
we get g = 9.79 m/sec2
g' = 2.19 g = 21.44 m/sec2
