Question

Please answer parts a-e! Thank you!

Evaluate each statement (T/F/N). As always you must fully and correctly explain your answer and reasoning. Magnetic field lines are always perpendicular to any forces they exert. A magnetic field can accelerate a moving charge. If east is leftarrow, and north is x, then down is uparrow. If up is leftarrow, and north is uparrow, then west is x. If a straight segment of current carrying wire is pushed to the north by a magnetic field, and the current is flowing westward, then the field direction must be vertically upward.

Explanation / Answer

a. Magnetic forces do no work so the field lines are always perpendicular to their forces. Ans:T

b. Magnetic forces do no work so they cannot accelerate a charge. Ans:T

c. If we face towards the east then north is always towards our left side which in this case will be out of the plane. Ans:F

d. If we face towards the north then west is always towards our left side which in this case will be into the plane. Ans:T

e. From left hand rule we see that if field is along up and current is along west then force has to be along south. Ans:F
