Question
I havea question that has to do with the autonomic nervous system. It'sabout how side effects arise from the use of anti-cholinergicganglion blocking drugs, as well as anti-muscarinic drugs. Iunderstand that nicotinic and muscarinic receptors are located onthe autonomic ganglion. A fast EPSP occurs when acetylcholine bindswith the nicotinic receptor, but a slow EPSP occurs when it bindswith the muscarinic receptor on the ganglion. These receptors arealso located on the effector organs which synapse with thepostganglionic fibers. But I don't fully understand the concept ofwhat all of this has to do with causing side effects to occur. Forinstance, an anti-muscarinic drug is given for excessgastrointestinal motility, but it also may impair cognition. Howcome?Explanation / Answer
