Using the information in your book, determine: a) The amount of resistance provided by the wire. b) The voltage across the 1500 resistor c) The power dissipated by the 1500 resistor 120v 120 v 1500Explanation / Answer
1. From the chart, AVG#22 wire has resistance of 0.0530 ohm/ m
Given, voltage source, V = 120 V
resistor, R = 1500 ohm
a) total length of wire used = 2l = 2* 100 ft =30.48 m
so resistance offered by the wire = 0.0530*30.48 = 1.61544 ohm
b) now, current throuhg the circuit is i
so, V = iReff (ohms law)
but Reff = R + 1.61544 ohm
so, i = 120/(1500+1.61544) = 0.0799 A
so voltage droip across 1500 ohm = iR = 119.87 V
c) power dissipated by the 1500 ohms resistor = 119.87*0.0799 = 9.57768 W
2. given total current = 0.2 A = I1 + I2 ( from kirchoff's junction rule)
also, power at R2 = Vs*I2 = 0.75 W
power at R1 = Vs*I1
also total power = Vs*I1 + Vs*I2 = 2
Vs(0.2) = 2
Vs = 10 V
also, Vs = I2R2 = I1R1
and 0.75 = Vs^2/R2
R2 = 100/0.75 = 133.33 ohm
Reff = R1*R2/(R1 + R2)
and Vs^2/Reff = 2
100(R1 + 133.33)/133.33*R1 = 2
100R1 + 13333.33 = 266.66R1
R1 = 80 ohms
a. R1 = 80 ohm, R2 = 133.33 ohm
b. I1 = Vs/R1 = 0.125 A
I2 = Vs/R2 = 0.75 A
c. Vs = 10 V
d. Reff = Vs/(I1 + I2) = 11.42 ohm
