Question
Please answer two multiple choice question below. Thank you.
Consider the next food web in a lake ecosystem: Largemouth bass eat planktivorous fish. The planktivorous fish feed on herbivorous zooplankton. Zooplankton organisms eat phytoplankton. Phytoplankton are algae – primary producers. How should increased fishing pressure on the bass population in the lake ecosystem, affect the rate of primary production in the lake?
Consider the next food web in a lake ecosystem: Largemouth bass eat planktivorous fish. The planktivorous fish feed on herbivorous zooplankton. Zooplankton organisms eat phytoplankton. Phytoplankton are algae – primary producers. There has been a severe increase in fishing pressure on the bass population in the lake ecosystem below. What would be the effect of the increase in fishing pressure, on the clarity of the water in this lake? Clarity of the lake will increase None of the above Clarity of the lake will decrease Clarity of the lake will not changeExplanation / Answer
1.Clarity of the lake will decrease.
This is an example of top down effect. With increase in fishing pressure on largemouth bass , population of larenough bass will decrease which in turn will cause increase in the population of planktivorous fishes because largemouth bass feeds in planktivorous fish. With increase in planktivorous fish, there will be decrease in zooplankton because planktivorous fish feeds on herbivorous zooplankton. With the decline in zooplankton, phytoplankton will increase in the lake and therefore clarity will decrease.
2.Primary production will increase .
With the decline in zooplankton, phytoplankton will increase in the lake and therefore primary production will increase.
