Consider the circuit shown in the figure(Figure 1). Suppose the four resistors in this circuit have the values R_1 = 13 Ohm, R_2 = 6.1 Ohm, R_3 = 7.9 Ohm, and R_4 = 13 Ohm, and that the emf of the battery is epsilon = 18 V. Find the current through each resistor using the rules for series and parallel resistors. Express your answers using two significant figures separated by commas. Find the current through each resistor using Kirchhoff's rules. Express your answers using two significant figures separated by commas.

Explanation / Answer

Part A

net resistance =R

R2 and R4 are in series ,their net =19.1 ohm

this is in parallel with R3 ,net=5.59 ohm

now this is in series with R1

R=R1+5.59=18.59 ohm

Current through R1=I1=E/R=0.97 A

current through R2 and R4 =I2=I4=(R3/(R3+R4+R2))*0.97=0.28 A (By current dividing principle)

current through R3=I3=0.97-0.28=0.69 A

Part B

let current in R1 be I1 and current in R3 be i3 and current in R2 be I2 and R4 be I4

writing KVL we got

18=I3*R3+i1*R1.............(i)

I3*R3=I2*(R2)+(I4*R4)..........(ii)

I=I2+I3......................(iii)

I2=I4...............(iv)

solving four equation we got

I1=0.97

I2=I4=0.28 A

I3=0.69 A
