Question

I have this physics question and I am confused about the trajectory and force equations. I'm assuming that I could use Lenz's Law since it deals with the Electric and Magentic Fields. This is what I have for my answers but am unsure about the trajectory.

a) F = 0; Particle is stationary-will not move at all.

b) F = QE0ax where ax is the unit vector in the positive x-direction; the trajectory will be spiral motion? Or is the trajectroy along a straight path in the direction of the force?

c) F = Qv0B0ay where ay is the unit vector in the positive y-direction; the trajectory will be circular motion?

Also should I mention the direction of the particle, for example clockwise or counterclockwise?

2. Consider a particle of mass m and charge q moving in a combined electric E and ma magnetic B fields. Describe (with equations) the motion for the following cases: (a) E=0, (b) E = E,a" (c) E=0, In each case, just write the equation for the responsible forces and describe the ex trajectory. B Boa,, and the initial velocity v = v,a: B = Boa, and the initial velocity v = v,az B-Ba,, and the initial velocity v = vol, pected

Explanation / Answer

a) F = 0 , but the particle was initially having velocity V = V0az, so it will keep moving in a straight line.

b) F = q.E0ax, so the equation of trajectory will be (V0az.t)z + (0.5*(F/m)*t2)x, So the trajectory will be a parabolic trajectory.

c) F = qV X B = (-qV0ax.B0.az)y, So the trajecory will again be a parabola. In above case curve shifting towards X- axis , this time towards Y-axis.
