Question

Please use clearly methode to explain and mention the formulas. If you can provide me a refrence for more details it would be better. 2) The UML Van de Graaff Accelerator makes use of the 'Li(p.n)'Be reaction to produce fast neutrons. The tasks below pertain to this nuclear reaction and its products. 6% a) Given that the mass of an electron is 5.485 803E-4 amu, make use of the atomic mass data in the Table of Nuclear Properties handout to calculate the mass of the nucleus (in amu, and to six decimal places) for Li-7, H-1, and Be-7. Make use of these nuclear masses to answer the remaining parts of this question. b) Calculate the Q-value for the Li(p,n)7Be reaction. c) Determine the threshold kinetic energy (in MeV) for the incident proton for the 'Li(p.n)'Be reaction, and the corresponding kinetic energy (in MeV) of the neutron. d) Determine the kinetic energy (in MeV) for the incident proton which defines the upper limit for double-values of the neutron kinetic energy for the 'Li(p.n)'Be reaction, and the two corresponding values of kinetic energy (in MeV) for the neutron (assume an emergent angle of zero radians for the neutron). 4% 5% 6%

Explanation / Answer

a) From the table
   mass of 7 Li = 7.0160 amu
   mass of 1 H = 1.00782 amu
   mass of 7 Be = 7.1069 amu
   mass of proton = 1.00727 amu
   mass of neutron = 1.008664 amu
b) Q value for 7 Li + 1p -> 7 Be + 1n
   Q value = dm*c^2
   dm = 7.016 + 1.00727 - 7.1069 - 1.008664 = -0.092294 amu
   1 amu = 1.66054*10^-27 kg
   hence q value = dm*c^2 = -13.793*10^-12 J
c) so, for the reaction to happen, the incident proton musht have 13.793*10^-12 J = 86.207 MeV energy
   and corresponding energy of neutron will be 0
