Question

Prelab Questions, Answer these questions before coming to the lab and turn in your answers at th beginning of the lab to get credit. Turning this prelab question sheet at the end of the lab would result in not getting any credit for the prelab. 1. A cube's length was measured with a caliper to be 3,238 cm and the mass of the cube is 91.66 g. a) How many significant figures you get when you read with this caliper? b) Calculate the volume of the cube in m. Specify the number of the significant figures c) What is the density of the cube in kg/m. Show your work. How many significant figures you should have in your answer? 2. What mass (in grams) should a cube have to be made of copper (copper density-8990 kg/m) if the length of the cube is 1 inch? Show your work to get credit.

Explanation / Answer

1.(a) As L=3.238 cm, so number of significant figure is 4.

So, you get 4 significant figure with this caliper.

b)Since L=3.238 cm = 3.238/100 m =0.03238 m (4 significant figure)

So, when you multiply or divide, the result should have significant figure of least once.

V= L^3 =(0.03238)^3 =0.00003395( 4 significant figure )

Number of signifiant figure is 4.

c)m =91.66g= 91.66/1000 kg =0.09166 kg (4 significant figure)

V=0.00003395 m3 (4 significant figure)

density =m/v =0.09166 kg/(0.00003395 m3 ) =2700 kg/m3(4 significant figure)

Number of signifiant figure is 4.

2) L=1 inch =2.54 cm =2.54/100 m =0.0254 m

volume of cube =L^3 =0.02543 m3 =0.000645 m3

mass = density*volume =8990*0.000645 kg= 5.80*103 g
