Question

Please answer the following, will give a thumbs up.

Two ice skaters, Alice and John, use their hands to push each other away. Alice has a mass of 54kg and Johrn has a mass of 70kg. John applies a constant force of magnitude 160N to Alice. What is the magnitude of the force that Alice applies to John? You can assume negligible friction, so there are no other forces in this problem During the period that this force is being applied, what is John's acceleration? m. During the period that this force is being applied, what is Alice's acceleration? m.

Explanation / Answer

Here ,

mass of alice , M1 = 54 Kg

Mass of John , M2 = 70 Kg

according to Newton's third law of motion

the force on ALice by John is same as the force exerted by Alice on JOhn

hence, magnitude of force applied on John = 160 N

----------------

for the acceleration

John's acceleration = force/mass of John

John's acceleration = 160/70

John's acceleration = 2.23 m/s^2

----------------------
for the aceleration of ALice

ALice's acceleration = force/mass of ALice

ALice's acceleration = 160/54

ALice's acceleration = 2.96 m/s^2
