Question

  1. A20 kg wagon is pulled along the level ground by a rope inclined at30 degrees above the horizontal. A friction force of 30 N opposesthe motion. How large is the pulling force if the wagon is movingwith (a) constant speed, and (b) an acceleration of 0.4 m/s2?

Explanation / Answer

a) If the wagon moves with constant speed .... then friction balances the horizontal component of force by rope ...
Let the force in the rope be F

horizontal component of force by rope = F * cos 30

so.. F * cos 30 = 30
so.. force F = 34.641 N

so... pulling force = 34.641 N

b) if acceleration = 0.4 m/sec2
then horizontal component of force - Friction = mass * acceleration

so... F * cos 30 - 30 = 20 * 0.4

so... F = 43.8786 N

so... pulling force = 43.8786 N
