Question

Hey how would I solve this? A capacitor is constructed of two concentric conductingcylindrical sheels. The radius of the inner cylindrical shell is2.35 x 10-3 m, and that of the outer shell is 2.53 x10-3 m. When the cylinders carry equal and oppositecharges of magnitude 2.1 x 10-10 C, the electric fieldbetween the plates has an average magnitude of 3.3 x 104V/m and is directed radially outward from the inner shell to theouter shell. Determine (a) the magnitude of thepotential difference between the cylindrical shells and(b) the capacitance of this capacitor.

Explanation / Answer

Given that     a = 2.35 x 10-3 m     b = 2.53 x 10-3 m.     q = 2.1 x 10-10 C     E = 3.3 x 104 V/m     d = (2.53 - 2.35) x 10-3 m = 0.18 x10-3 m (a) We know that            V = E d                = 3.3 x 104 * 0.18 x 10-3 = 5.94 V (b) C = q / V = 2.1 x 10-10 / 5.94                         = 35.35 pF
