Question

Since the "expert" forgot to answer Parts C) D) and E) I'm asking... if 2 large conducting plates are separated by 10cm and have uniform surface charge densities that are equal in magnitude but opposite in sign have a difference in potential of 500V.
C) An electron is released from rest next to the negatively charged surface. Find the work done by the electric field on the electron as the electron moves from the release point to the positive plate. Express your answer in both electron volts and joules.
D) What is the change in potential energy of the electron when it moves from teh release point to the positive plate?
E) What is the kinetic energy when it reaches the positive plate?

Explanation / Answer

c) Work done by the electric field is W = q V

                                                          = 1.6 *10^-19 C *500V

                                                          = 8.01 *10^-17 J

    converting into electron volts is W =( 8.01*10^-17J)/ 1.6*10^-19J

                                                    = 500eV

d ) change in potential energy of the electron is P.E = -500eV

e ) Kinetic energy K.E = -P.E = 500eV
