Question
Part 2 (1 mark per question) Note: In this section I am being unfair to Lucretius because he was a poet, not a philosopher. In his book he uses arguments from various sources in favour of the Epicurean school of philosophy. It is not the poet's fault that the different arguments he uses (presumably taken from different sources) often contradict each other 1.325-400 (1st C. BC) Document 1: Lucretius On the Nature of the Unive "Things are not hemmed in by the pressure of solid bodies in a tight mass. That is because there is empty space in things. Noises pass through walls and fly into closed buildings. Freezing cold penetrates to the bones. If there were no vacancies through which the various bodies could make their way, none of these phenomena would be possible. When one thing is no less bulky than another but obviously lighter, it plainly declares that there is more vaccuum in it, while the heavier object proclaims that there is more matter in it and less empty space." 9. In the text above Lucretius makes two arguments that even solid things have empty space in them. His first argument is that sound and cold could not penetrate solid matter if it contained no empty spaces. Which of the following theories is he relying upon, based on the text? a. Sound and heat are carried by vibrations of atoms b. Sound and heat are carried by some sorts of bodies c. Sound and heat are inherent properties of atoms d. There is no way to tell. 10. On this theory should a denser body (one with less empty space) be easier or harder for sound and cold to penetrate? a. Easier. b. Harder. c. The same d. There is no way to tell.Explanation / Answer
9. Option B is correct because as per the poet there should be some body to carry sound and heat.
10. option B is correct. Because denser bidy contains less empty space which does not allow sound to pass.
11. Option C is correct because more denser means less empty spaces. Light denser means more empty spaces.
12. option A is correct. Because freezing cold can pass through bones. means denser materials are having capacity to pass cold thand lighter like feather.
