CEGR 416-ASSIGNMENT #2 (WEEK 3) Using conceptual definitions of urban transit modes, define and explain the similarities and dis-similarities between: 1. a. Private auto and bicycle b. Private auto and taxi c. Taxi and bus Include physical, operational, and service features of these modes. give characteristics, and describe the role of commuter transit systems or fine, services, mainly referring to large cities. Which basic features define a transit mode? Apply that definition to show what make the following pairs of transit systems different modes: 3. a. Bus and trolleybus b. Express bus and shuttle bus c. Light rail and rapid transit.

Explanation / Answer

1 a) Private auto and bus: Private auto is generally found in the medium cities and cities which is used to connect the first mile and last mile ranging distances from 1 km to 20 km while the bicycle is the non motorized traffic which is used for very short distribution which is 1 km to 5 km that is the temporal distribution is limited.

b). private auto and bus: Private auto is generally found in the medium cities and cities which is used to connect the first mile and last mile ranging distances from 1 km to 20 km while taxi is also used to cover the first and last mile connectivity which has greater speed than auto takes less travel time and covers major distances.

c) . taxi is also used to cover the first and last mile connectivity which has greater speed and takes less travel time and covers major distances but a bus is used to transport a large number of passengers at the same time generally which requires a number of taxies which cause congestion. Bus is also used to connect last mile and first mile and also it can travel large distances or within CBD.

2) The commuter transit system is mainly buses, LRT, HRT, Metro which is widely used in the major cities. these require the following characteristics, such that the waiting time should be minimum, they should be 90% reliability of time, greater speeds, the distance between stops should not be less than 500 m, should be easily accessible etc. The commuter transit system transport large number of passengers in a single trip which is an effective way of the transportation system and reduces the problem of congestion. Many cities made compulsory the minimum 50% of the transit system share and encouraging the public to take transit systems and applying congestion pricing on the private vehicles and also providing separate lanes for this systems.
