Question

I need some help on this problem for my physics homework. The bookis physics (8th) Cutnell. Problem 35 chapter 9. It reads asfollows:

-Multiple-Concept Example 10 provides one model for solving thistype of problem. Two wheels have the same mass and radius of 4.6 kgand 0.37 m, respectively. One has (a) the shape ofa hoop and the other (b) the shape of a soliddisk. The wheels start from rest and have a constant angularacceleration with respect to a rotational axis that isperpendicular to the plane of the wheel at its center. Each turnsthrough an angle of 12 rad in 8.6 s. Find the net external torquethat acts on each wheel.
Thanks for your help!!

Explanation / Answer

    Given that the mass of each wheel is m = 4.6 kg     Radius of wheel is r = 0.37 m     Angular displacement is = 12 rad     Time taken is t = 8.6 s ------------------------------------------------------------------------------        From the equation of motionthe angular displacement is = *t +(1/2)t2                                                                                               = 0 + (1/2)t2                                                                                               = (1/2)t2                                                                                             = 2 / t2                                                                                                = 0.32 rad/s2 (a)     Moment of inertia of hoop of mass m and radius ris I1 = mr2 So the torque is = I1*    =mr2    = 0.201 N.m      ( b ) Moment of inertia of disk of mass m and radius r is I2= mr2 / 2       So the torque is = I2*    =mr2 / 2    = 0.10 N.m
