Mass m = 10 kg               M = 3 kg Initial speeds u = 16 m / s                     U= -8 m / s Since velocity in right be taken as positive Let the velocities of the masses after collision be v andV from law of conservation of momentum , mu + MU = mv +MV                                                        160 - 24 = 10 v + 3 V    ---( 1) for elastic collision V-v = u-U                                     =24                                 V = 24 + v    ---( 2) from eq ( 1) , 136 = 10 v + 3( 24 + v )                             = 10 v + 72 + 3v                             = 13 v + 72                          v = 4.923 m / s from eq ( 2 ) V = 28.923 m / s (b).
