Question 99 from Chapter 4 in College Physics, 6th Edition byWilson

A packing crate is placed on a 20 degree inclined plane. Ifthe coefficient of static friction between the crate and the planein 0.65, will the crate slide down the plane if released fromrest? Justify your answer please.

I do not see how you can solve this without knowing the mass of thecrate? Or should I use the trig functions to solve it? And how would I know by looking at a number if the crate willslide?

Thank you so much for your time and effort.

Explanation / Answer

Coefficient of static friction between the crate and theplane = 0.65 So, frictional angle = tan -1 ( )                                =33 o Given angle i.e. 20 o is less than 33o The crate does not slide down Given angle i.e. 20 o is less than 33o The crate does not slide down
