Question

I'm really confused on this question that is talking about a mother and it's newborn, Part A) which of the following antibody types produced by a pregnant mother's B ceels is most likely to provide immunity to a fetus by crossing the placenta? IgD,IgE,IgM,IgG or IgA? Part B) Which of the following antibody types produced by a mother's immune system is most likely to provide immunity to a breastfed newborn? IgD,IgM,IgA,IgE or IgG?

For part A I picked IgG and for part B I chose IgA, I'm not really sure which is correct for the parts, an explanation would help a lot.

Explanation / Answer

Part - A ---- Ans.IgG

IgG is the antibody produced by a pregnant mother B cells and provide immunity to a fetus by crossing the Placenta. there are mainly 3 antibodies which involves in the protection of fetus in different individuals. in Humans the antibody IgG is the only antibody that can cross the placenta due to its smaller size and protects the fetus immediately after birth from the bacterial and viral infections. but in Primates IgM also cross the placenta along with the IgG.

Part - B

Ans.IgA

Mother First milk called Colostrum is rich with IgA. newborn attains IgA antibody through breastfeeding from the mother it transferred to the gut of the infant. IgA is the antibody which protects the infants from bacterial and viral infections until newborn can synthesize its own antibodies
