In a soccer game, a midfielder kicks the ball back 10 yards toa goalkeeper. The goalkeeper then kicks the ball straight up thefield 50 yards to a foward. What is the distance traveled by thesoccer ball? What is the displacement of the soccer ball? If the distance is 40 yards would thedisplacement be 50 yards? Also if the play described above lasted 5.0s, what is theaverage speed of the soccer ball? What is the average velocity ofthe soccer ball? Explanation / Answer

Wouldn't the distance be 10+50=60 and the displacement be50-10=40!? Pretty sure. ;) 60 yards/5.0s = 12 yards/second or 12 yards per second. Not sure what they mean by velocity vs. speed. Velocity is thechange in rate over the change in time, which is essentialy thesame as the speed (though they could want the velocity to use thedisplacement and not the distance, though that doesn't make senseto me).
